We were proud to celebrate our 60th anniversary in 2006 and are still growing with expansions in our Sales & Service divisions as well as a new 25,000 sq. ft. addition for Rescue manufacturing. This growth means that there is no limit to what PL can offer to our customers.

With Bud's passing in 2006, I have assumed the role as CEO and owner of PL Custom Emergency Vehicles and Rescue 1. I am proud to lead the PL/R1 family of employees, dealer networks, and sales representatives, all of whom continue to uphold Bud's vision and traditions that have been established over the past 36 years.

I have committed myself, along with all of us at PL Custom Emergency Vehicles, to uphold all of the company's philosophies and standards. Nobody will replace Bud, but we will carry on his "Legacy of Excellence".

PL Custom was founded in Pompton Lakes, New Jersey in 1946. In its early years, PL produced ambulance products for use in emergency medical transportation. The company moved to Brick, NJ in the late 1960’s. At that time, the company known as PL Custom Body & Equipment Co., Inc. continued its tradition of top quality ambulance vehicles. The brand of product produced by the company became permanently known as P&L’s.

Martin “Bud” V. Smock purchased PL Custom Body in 1970 at a time when the plant facility was 5,000 square feet and the company produced 3 ambulances per year with 7 employees. Martin Smock took over the company with a vision for the future. He believed that the ambulances could be made better and more effective to serve both patients & volunteer squads. His vision for the future developed a product line based on the highest possible quality and the latest leading edge technology.

PL Custom relocated from Brick to Wall Township in 1974 and as growth continued several facilities with larger space were occupied leading to its present location at 2201 Atlantic Avenue. The company currently occupies 110,000 square feet and has over 130 full time employees. Many of these employees have been with the company for 15, 20 & 30 years. Longevity and dedication to customer satisfaction are key components with the whole PL Custom staff. More than 180 ambulances, rescues and specialty vehicles are produced and delivered each year.

PL Custom offers all makes and models of ambulances. The Medallion sets the highest standard for the Type III Ambulance available today. The Titan Medium Duty Ambulance stands out among other vehicles for providing an ambulance that can “do” more. The Classic Type I provides the prefect compromise for Fire Department/ EMS personnel and their maintenance teams. PL Custom supports our custom ambulance line with our Sentry Mid Size Type III. as well as offering ambulance body remounts and all makes & designs of Fire Chiefs and First Response Vehicles.

All PL ambulances are produced in complete conformance with Federal Safety Standards and the company enjoys the status & recognition as a Ford Qualified Vehicle Modifier (QVM). PL is proud of its QVM status, which was obtained in 1988 and has been continuously maintained to present. QVM is a certification by Ford Motor Company assures that PL Custom produces vehicles in strict conformance to Ford standards at all times.

PL Custom is a Ford Authorized Warranty Service Center for light duty trucks. The company employs ASE certified mechanics on duty at all times to provide on-going preventive maintenance and repair service. A comprehensive parts inventory is maintained to further service clients. Within the State of New Jersey, we have established NJEV - New Jersey Emergency Vehicles, a division of the company dedicated to sales and service in NJ. We offer mobile service capacity so ambulance vehicles are rarely out of service to any local community. In this manner, volunteers are able to maintain the highest level of service to their communities.

PL and NJEV continue to expand its capabilities and services offered to our growing customer base with 25,000 sq ft committed to service of Rescue and Fire Apparatus as well as a full repair department to support ambulances and all other needed aspects for the repair of emergency vehicles.

We are particularly proud of our relationship with the Baltimore City Fire Department. They use the PL Custom F450 Classic Type I Ambulance and have 58 Medic Units currently in service.

Our vehicles are individually crafted for each one of our customers at our centrally located facility in Manasquan, New Jersey. PL Custom Emergency Vehicles distributes ambulances and rescue vehicles through a mix of factory supported sales in New Jersey and a strong dealer network of sales professionals covering the Northeast region from Maine to Virginia and West to Nebraska.
